Playa Jimi

As we drive north there are still some spots we had time to visit. We spent 4 peaceful nights at a campsite on the Pacific Coast- Playa Jimi. Probably our favorite Pacific coast campsite of Baja.

Picture perfect and only 4 other campers, just to the left, out of the frame.

We took a day to settle in. We setup all the sunshades, table, and toys. Cooked some queso birria and relaxed. The nearby cliffs and windy coastline were beckoning. The girls have taken a particular interest in challenging themselves to jump from higher and higher rocks, so we strolled along the left side of the beach.

The following morning after a hearty oatmeal breakfast and lots of zinc sunscreen slathering, we finally embarked on a steep and dusty hike, to the right of the beach. This was our first family hike (without use of a hiking backpack for Zosia)!

After 30 minutes and some dicey trail turns and gravelly spots, we were rewarded with beautiful coastline views to the north and south.

AND- we spotted a whale just 100m off the coast! Unbelievable. It seemed to dive and circle back to the same spot. Seemed like there was something at the bottom that was of interest? It’s diving entertained us for the next 30 minutes.

Later that evening, the wild crashing waves seemed especially dramatic at sunset. Lined with fisherman, who spent all day casting and recasting, I was overcome with a moment of extreme gratitude.

In all the chaos that surrounds our daily life, it is easy to lose track of the goodness a simple day can bring. Be it a strenuous hike, taking time with loved ones to sit and observe the surf, or spending a calm afternoon playing with watercolors.

These simple moments as a family allow us opportunities to observe the world around us and learn to be patient with one another. And not so strangely, it’s when I feel I can be the best mother. Perhaps my biggest life challenge thus far.
